Anguirus is a kaiju who first appeared in Toho's 1955 film Godzilla Raids Again. A heavily edited version was released theatrically in the United States on June 2, 1959 by Warner Bros. Pictures Inc., under the title Gigantis, the Fire Monster. Anguirus is Godzilla's first enemy and yet his best friend. Anguirus is a four-legged dinosaur that looks similar to an ankylosaurus. An ankylosaurus frozen for 150 million years, Anguirus is awakened and transformed by a hydrogen bomb test. Characterization, as with the first Godzilla, lends the film some seriousness and realism. Anguirus is a kaiju from the Godzilla media franchise. Anguirus was the second daikaiju to appear in a Toho film, opposing the King of the Monsters himself in Godzilla Raids Again which made him the very first kaiju to appear as an enemy to Godzilla. Anguirus is a relative of the dinosaur Ankylosaurus that lived around the same time as Godzilla. In its first appearance in Godzilla Raids Again, it is explained that Anguirus is capable of moving incredibly fast in spite of its bulk due to its brain extending into its chest and abdominal areas, allowing it to react more quickly.It is able to lunge at its opponents with massive leaps, as seen in Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, and is also capable of burrowing substantial distances. Anguirus appeared only a year after Godzilla. Anguirus is the secondary antagonist in Godzilla Raids Again, a supporting protagonist in Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs Gigan, and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, and a major antagonist in Godzilla… The two eventually fell off a cliff and into the ocean. Another Anguirus that appears in DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (1968) was a popular fellow kaiju to Mothra, Rodan and Godzilla.
